Why stains become permanent

When minerals stop sitting on the glass.

Hard water spots start on the surface. Wet and dry them enough times and the minerals bond to the glass, then etch into it. Kansas City-area water is hard: WaterOne reported an average of 135 mg/L in 2025 (2026 Water Quality Report), hard on the USGS scale.

At that point the spot is part of the glass surface, which is why it stays visible when the glass is wet and clean. It isn't really permanent, though. It can be polished out.

Signs

How to tell it's past cleaning.

WET TEST

Visible when wet

Spray the glass. If the spots stay visible, they're in the surface.

TOUCH

Rough to the touch

Bonded deposits feel rough; etched glass can feel slightly textured.

PATTERN

Same spots every time

Spots that return in the same places after cleaning are etched.

Where we see it

Long-neglected glass.

  • Windows that have faced sprinklers for years
  • Shower glass in homes with hard water
  • Glass railings and pool fences
  • Homes bought with existing staining
Keep it away

After restoration.

  • Aim sprinklers away from glass.
  • Squeegee shower glass after use.
  • Add a protective coating so new deposits rinse off.
How we do it

Inspect, test, restore, protect.

  1. Inspect

We sort bonded deposits from etching on each pane.

  2. Test spot

    You approve the result first.

  3. Restore

Deposits dissolved and etching polished out.

  4. Protect

Optional coating to keep it from coming back.

FAQ

Questions we get

Are etched water spots really removable?

In most cases, yes. They're polished out of the surface. We do a test spot so you can see it on your glass.

Why didn't vinegar or CLR work?

Those dissolve fresh mineral deposits. Once the glass itself is etched, there's nothing left to dissolve; it has to be polished.

How long does it take?

A shower enclosure can take a few hours; a whole house usually about two days.
