Why glass scratches

Most scratches come from cleaning.

Glass is hard, but grit is harder. A razor scraper, a dirty pad or a squeegee with sand in it drags particles across the surface and leaves fine lines. That's why so many scratches show up after a window cleaning or a construction final clean, not after an accident.

Tempered glass, used in doors, showers and large panes near the floor, can carry tiny surface particles from manufacturing, which makes scraper scratches more likely. Vandalism, keys and carts account for most of the rest.

How deep is it?

Three kinds of scratch.

Run a fingernail across the scratch. Whether it catches tells you a lot about what it'll take.

LIGHT

Hairline scratches

Visible in low sun, but your fingernail glides over them. These polish out quickly.

MEDIUM

Fingernail catches

Your nail catches slightly. Still restorable; it takes more careful, wider polishing to stay distortion-free.

DEEP

Gouges and chips

Deep or long gouges. We'll do a test spot and tell you honestly whether restoring or replacing makes more sense.

What we restore

Glass we work on.

  • Windows and patio doors
  • Frameless shower glass
  • Storefronts and entry doors
  • Office partitions and lobby glass
  • Glass railings and pool fences
Restore vs replace

Why restoring usually wins.

  • No glass to order and no lead time.
  • No removing frames, trim or seals.
  • A fraction of the cost, most of the time.
  • Usually done on site in about two days.
How we do it

Inspect, test, restore, protect.

  1. Inspect

We check each scratch's depth and the type of glass.

  2. Test spot

We polish a small area for you to approve.

  3. Restore

We polish the scratches out gradually so the glass stays optically flat.

  4. Protect

An optional coating makes the glass easier to clean safely.

FAQ

Questions we get

Can all scratches be removed?

Most can. Very deep gouges are the exception; we'll tell you after a test spot whether restoration makes sense.

Will the glass look wavy afterward?

Not when it's done properly. We polish a wider area gradually so the surface stays flat, and you approve a test spot first.

Can scratched tempered glass be restored?

Often, yes. We inspect it and do a test spot first, just like any other glass.

How do I avoid new scratches?

Don't use razor blades or abrasive pads on dry or gritty glass, rinse before you wipe, and ask your window cleaner how they handle construction debris.
